  • DO NOT USE multiple crashes at depth

I would like to warn all divers, simply not to use this. It’s quite simply unsafe. On 4/3/2024 I was diving in Monterey bay off a boat. Upon starting to descend, I noticed that the Apple Watch was still stuck in the stupid useless prescreen self certification questions on the Oceanic+ watch app. I poked at the buttons at the wheel and then the whole watch rebooted. The watch came back and launched to dive mode, I thought OK that’s bad but seems to be working now. 10 minutes later at 70 feet the application rebooted the watch again. This time resetting my bottom time as if I had just arrived giving me dangerously incorrect data. a minute later, it went to the very helpful big red crash screen saying “system crashed use a backup device and end the dive safely”. Incredible. I can see from the data in the Health app that all the information that was needed to reconstruct a profile safely was available to the application, minus the reboot cycle time. None of this meets normal dive computer behavior standards. I have more than a year of data from just using the depth app that Apple provided for free. Never had a problem with it as a backup on many dives. Just three dives on the Oceanic+ app and on the third, catastrophic application failure multiple times at depth. Apple should pull this application until it’s been completely overhaul. It’s quite possible to get somebody who doesn’t have the experience to deal with a crash computer, or might not have redundant unit, hurt or killed.

I already owned a Series 9, but decided to also purchase an Ultra 2 solely for diving. Used it for 6 recreational dives, and honestly if it would work well, it would be perfect for that I need. I need a bright display, small form factor, multiple air types, a compass, vibration alerts for safety stops, fast ascent and NDLs. The Oceanic app offers all of this, but only if and when it works. Out of my 6 dives, in 2 of them I had to resurface immediately after descending because the computer was not working. Not fun to surface, unlock your watch and try to get it to start when the sea is choppy. I had jumped in the water, it triggered a dive when my arm was half a meter underwater, then stopped the dive (we were still at the surface so I guess it makes sense). By the time we started to descend, it was already in "dive review" mode, and simply pressing the action button (mapped to the Oceanic app) was not restarting it. Honestly the fact that I even have to think about starting it is a deal breaker, and shows that not enough divers have been consulted by the Oceanic Product Managers. Most dive computers only start a dive at 1 meter depth; would be such an easy fix. Also, for less money you can get a Shearwater Tern, an amazing dive computer, that always works without you having to start it, and without having to pay a subscription. Because of these issues, I've actually returned the Ultra, as it simply doesn't work like the dive computer it should be for the price point. Yes, of course the watch has other features, but I already have a Series 9 for that :) I might consider giving it another shot in the future, but only once I know these issues are fixed, and so far I haven't been able to see any public ticket to track their progress on this issue, so I can only assume there's no progress and no fix. My tests were done at the end of March 2024.

I really wanted this to work better, but I’m very disappointed to say it didn’t work out the way it should have. The app on my Apple Watch Ultra worked well enough, but none of the information of my dives transferred to to my phone. Another diver in my group had exactly the same issue. Edit: it’s definitely working a lot better now, and hopefully they’ll keep improving it!
